Research News

Research is carried out to increase knowledge and understanding and subsequently help improve clinical practice, and the treatment options and services available.

One of our objectives is to provide up to date information about the latest research into bladder and bowel control problems. In this section you will be able to access some of the latest research information and news. You can also find out how you can help us by participating in research programmes yourself and about our own research efforts and the research programmes that we are involved in.

What is Research?

Research is simply the step by step process that involves collecting and examining information. We do research to improve our knowledge and understanding. It will invariably result in finding out something new.

Researchers are the people who carry out the research and they can be from all walks of life, including doctors, nurses, scientists, students and industry. Research can be driven by clinicians and industry alike. It can help improve clinical services available to patients or improve the design and manufacture of products. It can also help improve our understanding of bladder and bowel disorders and how they can impact someone's quality of life.

The aim of research is almost always the same - to find out how to make improvements for the benefit of the patient, whether that is a service, treatment or product.

We value research and appreciate how important it is in helping to improve the services, treatments and products available to those who suffer from a bladder or bowel disorder.

Taking Part in Research

B&BF fully supports research projects that seek to improve the care and treatment available for people suffering from bladder and bowels problems. To be fully effective, any such research must take into account the views and opinions of patients and carers.

You can help us to influence the development of new products and treatments that will in turn improve the quality of life for millions of people in the UK who are affected by bladder and bowel problems.

Please let us know if you would like to help us by taking part in research projects. For details of any current research projects please find a list of all current research studies below. Don't forget to also look in the Archive Research Studies section as there might be research still running from the previous year. You can select which year you wish to view in the Archive Research Studies link box at the bottom of this page.

B&BF Prevalance Research

To mark the launch of the Bladder and Bowel Foundation in September 2008, the charity commissioned a new piece of research to establish current prevalence of urinary and faecal incontinence and nocturnal enuresis. The research also explored attitudes and behaviours relating to help-seeking and beliefs about incontinence and prevalence, impact, causes and treatments.
