Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

What is IBS?

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is the name health professionals have given to a series of symptoms relating to a disturbance of the large bowel.

Symptoms of IBS can include:

  • Abdominal cramps
  • Alteration in bowel habit – alternating from diarrhoea to constipation
  • Bloated and swollen abdomen
  • Gurgling noises in stomach area
  • Excessive wind

Often, when tests are carried out to investigate these symptoms, the tests usually come back to show that there is no obvious abnormality.
